‘They Live’ arose after an intense and emotional time spent in transcendental meditation. I grabbed my guitar for help, found an Em chord, and poured out words about physical and emotional rape. It also shares a link with John Carpenter’s 1988 film ‘They Live,’ which metaphorically addresses the exploitation of our human bodies and livelihood under the political systems that govern the world. ‘They Live’ is a song about predators, but it empathises with, and reaches out to those who are and have been taken advantage of.
